Check your light first
Watch the growing area across the day before buying plants. Sun exposure can change dramatically around buildings, fences and balconies. Use that information to choose crops rather than trying to force a sun hungry plant into a dim corner.
Use the right container or bed
Roots need enough room to develop and containers need drainage. Larger containers usually hold moisture longer than tiny pots. If you have ground space, a compact raised or in ground bed can simplify watering and give you more planting room.
Think in seasons, not one planting day
Small gardens can stay useful when finished crops are replaced with another suitable crop. Keep notes on planting dates, harvests and empty spaces. That makes the next season easier to plan.
